Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID, the 'Central Transmison Utility (CTU)' of the country and a 'Navratna' Company operating under Ministry of Power, is engaged in power transmission business with the responsibility for planning, implementation, operation and maintenance of inter-State transmission system and operation of National & Regional Power Grids. POWERGRID is a listed Company, with 57.90% holding of Government of India and balance by Institutional Investors & public. Power Grid Corporation of India limited (POWERGRID) was incorporated on October 23, 1989. POWERGRID started functioning on management basis with effect from August, 1991 and it took over transmission assets from NTPC, NHPC, NEEPCO and other Central/Joint Sector Organizations during 1992-93 in a phased manner. POWERGRID has been implementing various transmission projects for generation capacity addition under central sector, Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPPs), Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and other projects. As on July 31, 2016, the Company owns & operates transmission network of about 1,31,728 ckm of transmission lines and 213 nos. of EHVAC & HVDC substations with transformation capacity of about 2,65,663 MVA. The company exhibited an impressive financial performance during FY 2015–16, earning a net profit of Rs. 6,027 Crore with Turnover of Rs. 21,281 Crore and the Gross Fixed Assets of Rs. 150,052 Crore. The Company continues to wheel about 50% of total power generated in the Country through its transmission network at an availability of over 99% consistently. The availability for FY 2015-16 was 99.72% with number of tripping per line limited to 0.66. With rapid increase in asset base of the organisation, National Transmission Asset Management Centre (NTAMC) has been established, which is manned by experts on 24x7 basis to provide expert handling to system & equipment.
